There There
It's been a while since I last wrote about literature on the blog. From time to time, there are some nerds like me out there who ask about the bookclub, so here I am again rambling about a book that has touched me a lot. Of all the things I recommend, nothing makes me happier than receiving a message from a reader saying that he/she has read a book that I've suggested and liked it very much. It is often said that if we have read the same books it's as if we know each other, that is exactly what I feel when we have this interaction. It's as if we have spent those 8 to 10 hours reading together, experiencing the same emotions and the process of metamorphosis to which some books submit us to. "There There" written by Tommy Orange, was one of those books during which I felt a blossoming of a better, more educated, version of myself. It took me to a reality never explored before, made me realize how ignorant I was in relation to the ethnicity in which this story concentrates on, and changed my perception on it forever. There is nothing more special than feeling that on that side of the screen sometimes you go through journeys like this as well.
Há muito que não escrevia sobre literatura aqui no blog. Mas de vez em quando, há por aí uns nerds como eu que vão perguntado pelo bookclub, por isso aqui estou eu novamente a divagar sobre um livro que me tocou muito. De todas as coisas que eu vou recomendando, nada me deixa mais contente do que receber uma mensagem de um leitor a dizer que leu um livro que eu recomendei e de que gostou muito. Costuma dizer-se que se já tivermos lido os mesmos livros é como se nos conhecêssemos, é isso mesmo que sinto quando temos esta interacção. De alguma forma é como se tivéssemos passado aquelas 8 a 10 horas de leitura juntos, tivéssemos experienciado as mesmas emoções inclusive o processo de metamorfose a que alguns livros nos submetem. “There There” escrito por Tommy Orange, foi um desses livros durante o qual senti um desabrochar de um outro eu. Levou-me para uma realidade nunca antes explorada, fez com que me apercebesse do quão ignorante eu era em relação à etnia na qual a história se concentra e mudou a minha forma de pensar para todo o sempre. Não há nada mais especial do que sentir que desse lado do ecrã às vezes vocês passam por viagens pessoais semelhantes a esta.

I felt slightly exhausted after this book because throughout it I lived several lives, all of them quite complex and wounded by a giant identity crisis. Let me explain, "There There" explores a reality that I've never seen addressed before in literature, that of Native Americans in modern society, more specifically in Oklahoma. The book begins with what appear to be various short stories that, when you least expect, cross, intertwine and tie together. Apart from how rich in emotions this story is, the way the book is structured is of an expertise that only a wonderful writer, like Tommy Orange is proving to be, is capable of. For literature nerds like me it's wonderful to watch the way Tommy fits the pieces of the puzzle and plays with chronology. His writing is so specific and genius that I had still not finished his book and was already yearning for the next one. To be clear, this was his first!
"There There" is not easy to read, the author exposes the crude reality of urban Indians without apologizing for how sad it is. He does not ignore the past. Often refers to the adversities Indians have suffered since the invasion of North America and whose wounds have not healed. Tommy Orange exposes addition, domestic violence, family tragedies, questions of identity, suicide, lost dreams... It's exactly because it has been so difficult to read at times that I loved it so much. This book educates, it lays bare both pain and light at the end of the tunnel. The author does not offer easy answers, instead brings up many questions that remain unsolved even when you finish the book. Questions that the reader takes with him/her to their day to day life and that will change the way he/she sees the world.
Eu senti-me levemente exausta ao ler este livro porque vivi ao longo desta leitura várias vidas, todas elas bastante complexas e feridas por uma crise de identidade gigante. Passo a explicar, “There There” explora uma realidade que eu julgo ser muito pouco abordada na literatura actual, a dos nativo americanos na sociedade moderna, mais concretamente em Oklahoma. O livro começa com o que aparentam ser várias short stories que, quando dás por ti, se cruzam, entrelaçam e atam umas às outras. Para além do quão rica em emoções esta história é, a forma como o livro está estruturada é de uma perícia imensa de que só um escritor maravilhoso, como Tommy Orange está a provar ser, é capaz. Para nerds da literatura como eu é maravilhoso assistir à forma como Tommy vai encaixando as peças do puzzle e brincando com a cronologia. A sua escrita é tão especifica e genial que ainda eu não tinha acabado este livro e já estava a ansiar pelo próximo. Para que fique explícito, este foi o seu primeiro!
“There There” não é fácil de ler, o autor expõe a realidade crua dos índios urbanos sem pedir desculpa pelo quão triste ela é. Ele não ignora o passado, refere-se muitas vezes às adversidades pela quais os índios passaram desde da invasão da América do norte e cujas feridas não estão saradas. Fala-se de adição, de violência doméstica, de tragédias familiares, de questões de identidade, de suicídio, de sonhos perdidos...É precisamente por ser por vezes tão difícil de ler que eu amei esta obra. “There There” é um livro que educa, que expõe tanto dor como a luz ao fim do túnel. O autor não oferece respostas fáceis, ao invés faz questões que ficam no ar mesmo depois de terminado o livro. Questões que o leitor leva consigo para o seu dia a dia e que mudam a forma como vê o mundo.
“There’s a secret war on women going on in the world. Secret even to us. Secret even though we know it.”
I don’t want to tell you much about the actual narrative, I just want you to know that this is a story that accelerates the pulse, that fills the eyes with tears, that combines tragedy with humor and love and that, above all, has never been told and, for that reason, deserves the attention of all of us.
This is a lesson we should have attended a long time ago but that, since the early days of the creation of the United States as we know them, has been suppressed.
Não vos quero desvendar muito sobre a narrativa do livro, quero apenas que saibam que este é uma história que acelera o pulso, que enche os olhos de lágrimas, que conjuga a tragédia com o humor e o amor e que, acima de tudo, nunca antes foi contada, portanto merece a atenção de todos nós.
Esta é uma lição à qual devíamos ter assistido há muito mas que tem sido suprimida deste os primórdios da criação dos Estados Unidos como hoje os conhecemos.
