Our bedroom & bespoke bed
This is where the morning comes through. Sometimes sunny, other times grumpy. Both Martin and I travel a lot, we occasionally have the opportunity to stay in incredible hotels but, the truth is, none of them offer the comfort of our room.
É por aqui que a manhã chega. Às vezes cheia de sol, outras vezes rabugenta. Tanto eu como o Martin viajamos bastante, ocasionalmente temos a oportunidade de ficar hospedámos em hotéis incríveis, mas a verdade é que nenhum deles oferece o conforto do nosso quarto.
In this still very much naked room, our bed stands out. It was designed by us together with Madeira Rosa Studio and manufactured in Portugal.
Nesta decoração ainda muito despida, destaca-se a nossa cama, desenhada por nós em conjunto com o estúdio Madeira Rosa e fabricada em Portugal.
When I go through my childhood memories, I always stop on the mornings when, tiptoeing, I made my way to my parents' room to snuggle up with them. I don't know if this was a matter of my smallness at the time, but my parents' bed seemed to fit the whole world. Even when stretching my limbs forming a big X, there was still room for everyone. I always wanted a bed like theirs. Big, as big as our love.
Quando passo e repasso pelas minhas memórias de infância paro sempre nas manhãs em que, pé ante pé, me dirigia ao quarto dos meus pais para me encafuar no meio deles. Não sei se era uma questão de pequenez, mas na cama dos meus pais parecia caber o mundo inteiro. Mesmo esticando os membros formando um X havia espaço para todos. Eu sempre quis uma cama como a deles. Grande, como o nosso amor.
Madeira Rosa Studio was incredible in the process of creating this bed. Always available to discuss ideas and to deal with our indecisions, black or golden feet, walnut or oak structure, etc., etc. I especially like the fact that the bedside tables are part of the bed frame. As I said initially, I always wanted a big bed, but one that still conveyed elegance and timelessness. I organised everything remotely with Madeira Rosa Studio without ever touching the materials or seeing the faces of the people I spoke to daily. However, when I saw the structure taking shape within our four walls, I had the confirmation that thanks to them, we had been able to achieve exactly what we had in mind. A piece made by hand, in pure wood without synthetic fibres or the addition of agglomerates, with a soft touch and solid structure is a luxury that is worth investing in. After all, don't they say that we spend half our lives in bed?
O estúdio Madeira Rosa foi incrível no processo de criação desta cama. Sempre disponíveis para discutir ideias e para lidar com as nossas indecisões, pés pretos ou dourados, estrutura em nogueira ou carvalho, etc, etc. Gosto especialmente do facto das mesinhas de cabeceira fazerem parte da moldura da cama. Como disse inicialmente, sempre quis uma cama grande mas que, ainda assim, transmitisse elegância e intemporalidade. Organizei tudo à distância com o Madeira Rosa sem nunca tocar nos materiais ou ver a cara das pessoas com quem falava diariamente. No entanto quando vi a estrutura ganhar forma já dentro das nossas quatro paredes, tive a confirmação que, graças a eles, fomos capazes de concretizar exactamente aquilo que tínhamos em mente. Uma peça feita à mão, em madeira pura sem fibras sintéticas ou o acréscimo de aglomerados, com um toque suave e estrutura sólida é realmente um luxo no qual vale a pena investir. Afinal, não dizem que passamos metade da nossa vida a dormir?
In addition to painting the entire room (ceiling and skirting included) in a pinkish/beige tone, called “China Clay Dark”, we replaced the modern radiators with Victorian ones, the switches with metallic ones in aged gold and, of course, reinstalled the fireplace. In the past, all bedrooms use to have one but, in order to improve isolation and to make better use of space, a lot of people ended up covering or removing them. I'm glad we brought it back, it embellishes the space.
Nothing was ever massively planned during our renovations. I once read somewhere that, when decorating a home, one shouldn't worry too much about the final picture. Buy what speaks to you and, in the end, everything will merge nicely.
Para além de pintarmos o quarto todo (teto e rodapé incluídos) neste tom meio bege rosado, intitulado de China Clay Dark, substituímos os aquecedores modernos pelos de estilo vitoriano, os interruptores por uns metalizados em dourado envelhecido e, claro, reinstalamos a lareira que na nossa opinião embelece o espaço. Antigamente, todos os quartos tinham uma mas, por questões de isolamento e aproveitamento de espaço, foram-nas tapando ou removendo.
Nada durante as nossas renovações foi muito planeado. Li algures que, no decorar de uma casa, não nos devemos preocupar muito com o resultado final, optando sim por comprar aquilo de que realmente gostamos. No final dá tudo certo.
